What a good cover actually does

Ask ten readers why they picked up a book and most will tell you a story about the cover. Ask ten authors what a cover should do and you'll get ten different answers.

Our brief for a designer is short: the cover should tell a reader what kind of book they are holding, and why it belongs to them. Everything else is decoration.

The best covers we've made were also the ones our authors initially resisted. They didn't look like the books next to them on the shelf — which is exactly why the reader's eye caught on them.

About Publify Publishing

At Publify Publishing, we believe authors should understand their choices before making important decisions about their books. We work with authors through the publishing process while allowing them to maintain ownership and control of their work.

Whether you're preparing to publish your first book, working on your next one, or simply trying to understand your options, education should come before the sales pitch.

Because publishing a book isn't just about getting it onto Amazon. It's about giving your book the best possible beginning.
